The Association of Ukrainian Women in Great Britain (AUW) is a community organisation for UK-based Ukrainian women and women with Ukrainian connections established in 1948. It is a key community organisation for the Ukrainian diaspora in the UK. The AUW supports cultural, educational, humanitarian and social programmes.

The Archive of the AUW, unique in the UK, is therefore of huge significance across many areas of research and audience engagement. The collection is particularly important for studies of Ukrainian diaspora in the UK and women’s history, as well as being of great social importance to the Ukrainian community.  Its historical value lies in its refugee roots which present a significant opportunity to study the history of the Ukrainian diaspora in the UK in the 20th and 21st centuries. It is a significant resource for the study of refugees and forced migration, as well as presenting the opportunity to gain an understanding of the immigrant experience and its vital contribution to UK society.

The archive was previously held at Leicester Ukrainian Cultural Centre, but thanks to grants from The National Archives ‘Archives Revealed’ programme and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, it has been transferred to the University of East London Archives.  It now sits as part of the Living Refugee Archive, a series of collections documenting displaced voices and migration.  See https://www.livingrefugeearchive.org/archives/
