To date we have completed 2 major projects.
The first related to Liverpool’s Royal Institution (established 1814) which was essentially a forerunner of the University of Liverpool. It scrutinises the business interests of 200 individual subscribers with an emphasis on those with a interest in the slave trade or an indirect interest through any connection with slave goods or materials used in the trade.
The second and similar project relates to Liverpool’s Athenaeum(established 1797) and undertakes the same exercise for its first 250 members of that institution. It is essentially a digital archive of our findings which also includes biographies, family trees and supporting material such as wills of the leading slaving merchants. The material covers a time period from 1750-1840.
