Deaf History Scotland (DHS) is a community-led organisation founded in 2008 that is committed to preserving and documenting the history, culture, and activities of deaf individuals and organisations in Scotland as the caretaker of the Scottish Deaf Archive (SDA).
The SDA is a community-led archive with national and international importance. It holds over 200 years of material documenting the history, culture, and lives of deaf people and deaf communities in Scotland. The SDA is unique in its ambition to collect, preserve, and make accessible archival records relating to deaf people from across Scotland.
Unlike other significant deaf collections housed in national or local archives, the SDA is deaf-led and community-based, ensuring that these histories are represented in a way that reflects deaf perspectives and priorities.
