New sections added to Abandoned Communities Website

Two new sections have been added to the abandoned communities website. One is about two small communities that existed on the Machynys Peninsula just south of Llanelli. The communities, Machynys and Bwlch-y-gwynt, grew up among the local factories, brickworks and chemical plants, but when the tinplate industry moved elsewhere the Llanelli council decided to redevelop the whole area. The last people moved away around 1970. Several people who lived there as children or young people still feel attached to their old homes, and there is a local history group, the Glanymor and Tyisha History Group, that keeps alive the memory of the two communities. www.abandonedcommunities.co.uk/machynys.html

The other section is about the tiny village of Snap in Wiltshire. As farming practices changed towards the end of the nineteenth century work opportunities for the local people collapsed. Everyone moved away, the very last person being an infirm lady in her 80s. There are fascinating records related to the Methodist chapel at the nearby village of Woodsend where several residents of Snap attended. www.abandonedcommunities.co.uk/snap.html
